Attire & Dress Code

Dancers of all ages and levels have a prescribed dress code to ensure instructors can monitor alignment and form in order to prevent injury and ensure correct development of technique.
Each genre of dance comes with an etiquette of dress that further enhances the dance style! See below for your dancer’s dress code needs.

Accessories Policy:

NO smart watches of any kind, as these are a safety hazard
Stud earrings only – no dangling earrings – For performances, no earrings except for as per costume instructions
No necklaces, bracelets, or ankle bracelets
Undergarments should not be visible for class or shows

Creative Movement & Dance Exploration: Long hair pulled out of the face; Comfortable moving clothes or any color leotard and tights; Ballet shoes recommended

All Ballet Levels (Pre-Ballet-Level 5) – Gentlemen: Long hair pulled out of the face; Black tights or pants; White t-shirt; Black Ballet Shoes; appropriate under shorts or dance belt (dance belt recommended for Ballet 2 and up)

Pre-Ballet – Ladies: Long hair pulled out of the face; Pink leotard; Pink tights; Pink ballet shoes

Ballet 1 – Ladies: Long hair secured in a ballet bun; Blue leotard; Pink tights; Pink ballet shoes

Ballet 1/2, 2, and 2/3 – Ladies: Long hair secured in a ballet bun; Black leotard; Pink tights; Pink ballet shoes.

Ballet 3, 4 and 5 – Ladies: Long hair secured in a bun, or similar; Any color leotard (no neon; Pink tights; Pink ballet shoes/ pointe shoes; skirt permitted (no shorts)

Pre-Jazz/Tap/Hip Hop/Tumbling – Gentlemen: – Long hair pulled out of the face; Black tights or pants; White t-shirt; appropriate under shorts; Appropriate footwear for the class

Pre-Jazz/Tap/Hip Hop/Tumbling – Ladies: Long hair pulled out of the face; Any color leotard; Any color tights; Appropriate footwear for the class

Mixed Repertoire (All Non-Ballet Classes, Levels 1-5) – Gentlemen: Long hair pulled out of the face; Any color tights or pants; Any solid color t-shirt (no neon); appropriate under shorts or dance belt (dance belt recommended for Level 2 and up); Appropriate footwear for the class

Mixed Repertoire (All Non-Ballet Classes, Levels 1-5) – Ladies: Long hair pulled out of the face; Any comfortable & appropriate athletic clothing (leggings, tank top or leotard); No jeans, zippers, buttons, skirts, or dresses; Loose shorts should have spandex underneath; Appropriate footwear for the class

Adult/Open/Adaptive Classes All Genres: Any comfortable moving clothes or dance wear, ideally stretch fabrics; Appropriate footwear for the genre

Shoe Guide:

Ballet – ballet or pointe shoes as per class level

Modern – barefoot or as per instructor

Jazz – Jazz shoes

Tap – Tap shoes

Contemporary – socks, ballet shoes, barefoot at instructors discretion

Musical Theatre – Jazz shoes or Character Shoes at instructors discretion

Flamenco – Flamenco shoes

Highland – Ghillies

Hip Hop – sneakers

Tumbling – barefoot

DANCEWEAR GUIDE: Dance attire can be purchased online through retailers such as Eurotard Dancewear, DanceWear Solutions, or trusted local retailers Assemble Dancewear (Highlands Ranch, CO) or StylesInMotion (Las Cruces, NM). DALA also has some shoes available for free to borrow (sizes not guaranteed).
